Falmouth Road Reconstruction Project

September 24, 2008

Dear Resident:

This letter is to provide an update to the Falmouth Road Project (between Leighton Road and Winn Road).  As you may recall, the Parks and Public Works Department held a public meeting on March 19, 2008, to discuss improvements to Falmouth Road.  The main features of these improvements were the intersection of Winn and Falmouth Roads, drainage improvements and pavement widening.

Since this meeting, the Town has encountered many challenges with road construction and pavement projects.  The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) has cancelled all paving projects until further notice and the Town has assumed all responsibility for several road projects. While the Town has achieved cost savings with these changes, it has also encountered schedule adjustments and delays. In the spring of 2009, the Town will begin improvements to the intersection of Winn and Falmouth Roads. The realignment of this intersection is overdue and separating the intersection from the road construction will allow a timely completion date.

Another section of road that the MDOT has cancelled is Falmouth Road between Bucknam and Merrill.  The road condition and lack of a drainage system in this area reflects the need to make some major improvements. Because this project has been discussed for ten years, the Town has decided to prioritize this section of Falmouth Road. This change will move the reconstruction of Falmouth Road from Leighton to Winn back in the construction cycle and there is no anticipated work date at this time.

The Town appreciates your understanding with regards to this change in priority and the construction sequence, and we look forward to improving the Winn/Falmouth intersection in the spring.
