Location:  Mackworth Island is accessible from¬†the¬†Andrews Avenue causeway, which is off¬†US Route 1.  From Martin's Point in Portland, go north over the bridge to Andrews Avenue (3rd right); go east along Andrews Avenue to the causeway.
Parking:  Parking is allowed from dawn to dusk (in the parking lot to the right after crossing the causeway, before entering the Baxter School area).
Description:  The island-walk circles the island and is about 1.5 miles long.¬†The island totals about 100 acres. The Baxter School for the Deaf is here, and you are asked to keep to the perimeter pathway and not interfere with school activities. A children's playground is available during non-school hours.
Natural Features:  The trail is mostly wooded. It runs through stands of spruce and pine, with access to sandy and rocky beaches in several places. The whole island is a lovely, quiet, bird sanctuary. Visit the dog cemetery at the north end of the island.
Historical:  It is maintained by the State of Maine at the request of former Governor Percival Baxter, who gave the property to the State.
