Order to approve a supplemental appropriation from undesignated fund balance for a new local home heating fuel assistance program.
Councilor Cathy Breen, Town Clerk Kathleen Babeu, Town Manager Nathan Poore and representatives of several Falmouth churches met February 14 to discuss the future of the Falmouth Food pantry and the development of a new fuel assistance program.
We concluded that due to the high cost of heating fuel and limited federal and state resources, there is the likelihood of a local demand for assistance which is not funded. We forwarded a proposal to the Council's Finance Committee on February 15 to approve a supplemental appropriation for urgent needs in the amount of $5,000. We also recommended an appropriation of $5,000 for anticipated needs in the next heating season with a condition that other sources of funds be locally raised through donations that meet or exceed the local appropriation. The Finance Committee accepted the proposal and unanimously agreed to recommend the funding request.
